Stargazing Live was scheduled to air live shows on three consecutive nights from January 3-5, 2011, which coincided with tje occurrence of three celestial events: the close proximity of Jupiter to Uranus, a partial solar eclipse, and a meteor shower. Excited stargazers, amateur astronomy clubs, and schools from all around the UK organized stargazing parties and other events to watch the programs and celebrate the three-day event.
Each episode consisted of multiple segments presented by a variety of hosts including physicist and professor Brian Cox; comedian and amateur astronomer Dara O Briain; big cat expert, science enthusiast, and BBC television personality Liz Bronnin; astronomer Mark Thompson, and novice stargazer Jonathan Ross. Airing segments from various locations around the world, each presenter had us looking to the skies in an effort to bring the wonders of the stars into our homes.
Due to its popularity, a second series was aired on January 16-18, 2012, with each episode having a main theme: the moon, black holes, and extra-terrestrial life, with each episode featuring a variety of guests. The second episode featured a segment on light pollution and a demonstration of its impact was performed during the final episode during which every light in the town of Dulverton in Somerset was turned off.
During the 2012 series, viewers were encouraged to volunteer some time on the Planet Hunters Online Citizen Science Project in hope of locating a new exoplanet, a planet that orbits its star from outside of its stars' solar system. This effort resulted in the discovery of a Neptune-sized exoplanet which was named Threapleton Holmes B after the two amateur astronomers who found it.
