1  A Little Kiss (1)

The 1960s, dominated by the Civil Rights Movement, is a time of change throughout America, and for the Draper family, life has certainly changed. The children, Sally and Gene, must adapt to a new home, a new brother, and a new stepmother. Don, now living in a fancy new apartment with his sexy new wife, Megan, seems to have everything a man could want. However, Megan, still employed at the agency, has difficulty interpreting Don's expectations of her. His desire for a sex kitten at home and a prim and proper employee at the office, means Megan must learn to navigate the dual role while also struggling to earn the respect of her co-workers, many of whom believe that being the boss's wife is how she "earned" her new position. She throws Don a surprise birthday party, an unpleasant reminder to him that he has turned 40, but after Megan performs a risqué little number in front of everyone, Don is anything but happy. For other folks at the agency, life never seems to change. Peggy continues to be outspoken, Pete continues to feel unappreciated, Lane and Joan continue to wallow in their loneliness, and the first two named partners, Roger Sterling and Bert Cooper, continue to do absolutely nothing.

3  Tea Leaves

As Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce tries to build upon its current business, Peggy is given new responsibility. Don and Harry indulge a client. Betty contemplates her mortality after seeing a doctor. Recap: The episode begins, and Betty's back and unable to fit into her dress, as she has put on a few pounds. She tells Henry to go to an event without her; as she is in no mood to go after discovering her weight gain. Meanwhile, Don's still working with Heinz on an ad and the exec's latest suggestion is to get the Rolling Stones to record something for them; as that might help the campaign and the product, in a big way. Meanwhile, Pete tells Roger that Mohawk called and he thinks he should handle the account since he seems to get along with them. They're going to need a new copywriter for this. Don has a new secretary—one of the applicants he has chosen from the recent interviews—and Harry makes awkward small talk with her while waiting to see him. When he does, he tells Don about the Stones concert and suggests getting food before which Don turns down; as he is too preoccupied to think about food at this point, and is clearly not crazy about the Rolling Stones idea. Pauline stops by to check on Betty after she didn't show up the night before and tells her it upsets Henry when she's not there. She suggests Betty take diet pills, in order to control her increasing weight. Don tells Peggy that Mohawk's returning, and with her plate full, they need her to find them a new copywriter. Roger suggests getting "a good-looking version of Don." Betty takes Pauline's suggestion to heart and goes to her doctor for diet pills for reigning in her weight, but first, he wants to rule out a medical problem as the cause for the weight gain, and he seems to find something. This leads to her calling Don to tell him the doctor found a lump on her thyroid, seeking his reassurance that everything will be okay; as she is visibly worried by this news. Meanwhile, Stan tells Peggy she should hire someone who's mediocre because otherwise, the new copywriter could end up being her boss. However, she likes Michael Ginsberg's portfolio, and decides he is apt for the job. Betty bumps into Joyce, who almost doesn't recognize her, at the doctor's office, and she ends up agreeing to have lunch. Michael may have an impressive portfolio, but he doesn't do so well in the interview with Peggy, and she is clearly not impressed. First, he's surprised to find out she's interviewing him because he wants to talk to the person who can hire him, not the first round. But he needs to impress her first, and he just points to his work, adding that he'll be living at work because he has no friends, hobbies, or interests, which makes him just perfect for such a demanding job. She warns him that he can't act like he is around her when he's around Don. Meanwhile, Betty's talking to Joyce about how she found out she's sick and how she's handling it when Cecilia, with the "gift of sight," walks over and offers a reading. When she looks in Betty's tea leaves, she tells her she's a great soul who means a lot to those around her. When Roger asks Peggy about Michael, she tells him Don will hate him. However, they have to bring him on because he already told Mohawk, and thus can’t go back on it now. Harry and Don go to the Rolling Stones concert, but apparently the band and their manager aren't there yet, so they end up talking to two girls, and Harry takes the offered joint while Don turns it down, as he is clearly not interested. Later on, one of the girls grabs Harry and says they're letting them in, leaving Don and her friend behind. She's realistic when she tells him they don't have a chance at getting the band for a TV ad and tells him to relax, rather than being worried stiff. Betty finds herself in the kitchen, watching her family all in black and Sally turning her chair over onto the table. Obviously, it's just a dream, in the light of the recent events. Harry runs over to Don and says he got it, but that's when the crowd screams and runs in the other direction to see the Rolling Stones. It looks like he was talking to the opening band, and not the Stones. The next morning, Megan wakes Don up to head to Fire Island to see her friends, and he asks if Betty called, as he is still worried about how she is, since she received the news. He tells her that she may be sick, but he didn't tell her because he didn't know how she'd react and knew Betty wouldn't want her to know. Megan points out that this would affect her too (if it was something serious) and doesn't understand why he could go to the concert but can't go see her friends; as each is as important as the other. Meanwhile, Peggy brings Michael in to meet with Don, and Michael says that he's opinionated, but has admired Don since the letter. He wants to be part of the place, and after he leaves, Don tells Peggy to set him up, as he seems to have liked him, contrary to Peggy’s estimation. Michael's excited to hear he got the job and wants her to be proud of him. Will he turn out to be a good addition for this account, is a question that at this point creeps into Peggy’s mind. Meanwhile, the doctor calls Betty, and it turns out the growth is benign; much to Betty’s relief. Betty's fine and Henry's obviously ecstatic, when he receives this news. However, now Betty says she's just fat, and needs to reduce. He's focusing on the fact that he feels like he's been given a gift. Meanwhile, Pete gathers everyone to announce that Mohawk's returning to SCDP and says that Roger's handling the day-to-day operations. However, he also says that he'll know everything Roger does, which Roger does not like, as is clearly visible from his reaction. Don follows him to his office, and Roger tells him he's tired of it. That's when Don decides to blurt out that Betty could have cancer and he's thinking about their children growing up without a mother; much to Roger’s shock and horror. Roger wonders when things will get back to normal. Later, Don calls Betty, but Henry picks up instead. He asks if there was news about Betty, who obviously didn't tell Henry she called Don. Henry tells him that she's fine rather coldly, and after he hangs up and Betty asks who called, says "nobody", clearly not pleased about Don calling up. Don though, is visibly pleased on receiving this good news, and tells Megan the news when she comes in; Megan too is visibly relieved and pleased to receive this news. Meanwhile, Betty finishes her sundae, and when Sally leaves the table without finishing hers—she's full—she begins eating the rest of hers as well; she is clearly too relieved to worry about weight at this point, and wants to celebrate her relief, by indulging herself. The episode ends at this point.

4  Mystery Date

Don has an encounter with someone from the past. Meanwhile, Roger increases Peggy's workload, and Joan comes to a momentous decision. Recap: The scene opens, and Don's obviously sick as he and Megan get on the elevator, and she's not happy when they run into Andrea, whom he "worked with," though he tries to reassure her, that there is nothing between the two of them. Meanwhile, Joyce brings in crime scene photos, and Michael doesn't like how everyone's acting about them. Meanwhile, Joan's at home getting ready for Greg's return and visibly looking forward to it, and her mother suggests letting her take Kevin out before he gets there, but Joan wants him to meet him. Meanwhile, Sally calls Don to complain about Pauline being there and asks if he can come get her. He tells her he can't before hanging up, to focus on Michael's presentation, as that’s primarily on his mind at the present moment, and hence he doesn’t have time for anything else. He obviously should be home in bed, not working, as he looks visibly exhausted. Meanwhile, Greg returns home, and Joan greets him with a kiss, visibly glad to see him. After Greg briefly meets Kevin, Joan's mother takes him out, and Joan leads him into the bedroom; as its time for them to share a few intimate moments together. Meanwhile, Don apologizes to Megan for the elevator and tells her to let it go, reassuring her that there is nothing she needs to be worried about. She points out he brought it up, and he tells her he'll be with her until he dies ("which could be this afternoon"), hence she has nothing to worry about, at all. She in turn tells him to go home, but he has a meeting to attend. Pauline stops Sally from reading the newspaper and tells her she has to be respectful. She tells Sally she'll finish her sandwich, and she begins eating. When Joan wakes up, she finds Greg making himself a sandwich. He sends Gail out for beer, and once she leaves, he sits Joan down and tells her he has to go back for a year; much to Joan’s shock and dismay. Meanwhile, Butler likes Michael's presentation and is visibly sold on it, after, Michael tells them about his Cinderella idea, and they like that. Later in a bar, Don tells him not to do that again, and Michael doesn't realize how close he was to being fired. Don steps aside to call Megan, who suggests he go home and not smoke, as he needs to get some rest. He does just that, following her advice, as he is visibly exhausted and clearly seems to need a break. Meanwhile, though Roger is calm when Peter tells him Mohawk wants a walk-through for the campaign Monday morning, once he's gone, Roger runs looking for Michael to inform him about the same, but Michael’s obviously not there as he has already left some time back. Roger ends up paying Peggy 10 dollars to work up something, as he is clearly desperate, and she talks him into 400 more to keep the lie. He leaves before she can take his watch. Meanwhile, Don wakes up to the doorbell. Andrea's there and says they didn't get to talk; and hence she has landed at his doorstep, to clear things up. He is visibly displeased by her presence, and doesn't care for her presence and hence pushes her towards the service elevator as she says it was just sex that she wanted. He closes the door behind her ignoring her comments and goes to lie back down. Meanwhile, dinner with the parents doesn't go so well for Greg, especially once it comes out that he volunteered to go back. Unfortunately for Joan, the conversation is put on hold when a man begins playing accordion right next to her, much to her irritation. Meanwhile, it's late, but Peggy's still working...until she hears a noise, and is startled by it. She discovers that Dawn was sleeping in Don's office because she's scared because of the riots, and hence couldn’t muster the courage to go home. Peggy tells her she can stay with her, till things calm down and she feels safe again. Meanwhile, Don wakes up to find Andrea next to him, much to his shock, and though he tells her to leave, she tells him she'll be gone before Megan gets home and reminds him of their past; he clearly isn’t comfortable with this. He pulls her down onto the bed though. Meanwhile, Peggy's well on her way to being drunk as she tells Dawn how she became a copywriter, and Dawn asks her not to tell Don about her sleeping in his office; as he might not be too pleased to hear this. After Dawn tells her she likes her job and doesn't want to be a copywriter, Peggy tells her it's tough, especially for a woman, and asks if she thinks she acts like a man. Dawn says she has to a little in order to survive, and Peggy says she doesn't know if she has it in her—or if she wants to. Meanwhile, Sally can't sleep because she's scared after reading the newspaper, and what Pauline (who has a butcher knife next to her) tells her doesn't really do much to change that, and she still looks visibly worried about the whole thing. Sally doesn't think she'll be able to sleep, and Pauline takes out her pills to help her sleep. Meanwhile, Joan and Greg's fight has resumed, and it ends with him leaving for a drink with the guys; as he looks clearly exasperated and hence seems to need a break. There's an awkward moment when Peggy sets Dawn up on the couch and glances at her purse on the table. She leaves it there when she goes to bed. Andrea tells Don she'll see him later, after they have done the deed, but he says there won't be a next time; he makes that amply clear to her. When she doesn't buy it, he pushes her to the floor in anger and begins choking her much to her absolute shock and horror; he then pushes her body under the bed, her foot sticking out as he climbs back into bed to get some sleep. When Betty and Henry get home, they find Pauline out, the knife next to her, and Sally nowhere to be seen. She's sleeping underneath the couch, it turns out. Megan brings Don, breakfast in bed, and it's clear everything else was just a dream, that Don was having. She is apparently worried and tells him he was a mess the night before, and he tells her not to worry about him, as he is absolutely fine. The next morning, Joan tells Greg to "go and never come back"; as she is clearly angry and frustrated. She's sick of trying to make him feel like a man and tells him he was never a good man—and he knows why she's saying that. He takes his things and she lets him leave, without so much as trying to stop him in anyway. Meanwhile, Peggy wakes to find Dawn gone and a note thanking her for her hospitality on her bag. The episode ends at this point.

Lane attempts to land an account with Jaguar Cars, leading to a altercation with Pete. Pete and Trudy host a dinner party in the suburbs. Recap: The episode begins and Pete's in driver's education class, noticing one of the young girls there; he seems visibly taken by her. At home, he's kept awake by a leaky faucet and gets up to fix it, as he his visibly irritated by the sound. Meanwhile, Lane lucks out when he goes to a pub to watch the World Cup with Rebecca and ends up talking to a man who's looking for an ad agency, he is clearly excited to know this. Joan's back at work and when she asks about new business, Lane tells them about England winning the World Cup and the new friend he made in Edwin Baker, senior VP of Public Relations for Jaguar. They're looking for a new agency to break into the American market and dinner is set. While the others are happy about it, Pete's being very bitchy for some reason. Pete’s reaction shocks everyone present. After Lane leaves, Don says someone should give Lane advice, and Roger volunteers to be the guy to do so. Don wants to get out of dinner with the Campbells, but Megan tells him he'll have to call Trudy, if he wants to get out of it. After an awkward run-in at a diner, Ken explains himself to Peggy. He's been writing science fiction/fantasy under a nom de plume, and doing a good job of it, from the look of things. Meanwhile, Roger gives Lane some advice for his meeting, but will it lead to a successful business dinner with Edwin, that is the question that plagues Roger’s mind. While on the phone with Trudy, Don tries to get out of the dinner, but she's not going to take any of his excuses, and is adamant that he turn up for it. This dinner will happen, even if they have to reschedule, much to Don’s frustration and dismay. Pete is still enamored by the girl in class and ends up talking to the girl, during their driver's education class break. Meanwhile, Don's not looking forward to the dinner and wants to clearly avoid it, but Megan makes him change and stop drinking since he's driving, and hence it’s clearly dangerous. Once there, while the wives head into the kitchen, Don, Pete, and Ken relax in the living room, and Pete's visibly thrilled and a little too much from the look of things; as Don looks clearly uncomfortable with Pete’s joy. Meanwhile, Lane's at his own dinner with Edwin and trying very hard to make sure it goes well, as this meeting would decide whether he is able to get the account. Dinner talk turns to Ken's writing when Cynthia—and Megan's outburst upon someone mentioning her name is actually amusing since they couldn't remember her name—brings it up and tells the others about one of his stories. When the women head into the kitchen for dessert, the faucet ends up spraying water everywhere and it is completely broken; Don comes to the rescue, while Pete fidgets with his toolbox trying to fix it. Trudy comes in with their baby, and this leads to Don suggesting to Megan, "let's make a baby," as she's driving them home and asking her to pull over. She does; although she is visibly surprised by this sudden urge that Don is overcome with. At work the next day, Lane tells Roger and Pete he "primed" Edwin for another dinner, and Pete suggests letting them and Don take Edwin out for the business dinner and then Lane can "swoop in.", as that would really get the ball rolling. Pete's still talking to the young girl, Jenny, but he loses her interest when Hanson—nicknamed "Handsome"—walks in late (and mistakes Pete for the instructor); much to his dismay. Don, Roger, and Pete take Edwin out for dinner, and he says they should have some fun. He plans to give them the business but wants to make sure he has fun with those he's working with; hinting at the fact that they should show him a good time if they want his business. He and Lane don't have the same taste in that area, and Roger says he knows of a party around the corner which might just be the thing they are looking for. While Edwin, Roger, and Pete all head up to rooms with women, Don sits at the bar and actually stays solo for the evening, as he doesn’t want to have the sort of fun, the others are having. On the cab ride home, Pete doesn't like Don judging his actions, but Don points out that not everyone has what he has waiting at home. Don has changed from the look of things and is completely faithful to Meagan, but so has Pete and he is completely unfaithful to Trudy again from the look of things. He advises Pete to go home, take a shower, and forget it. Pete does head into the shower once he gets home. Roger lets Ken know he knows about his writing and reminds him that he has a day and night job. Rebecca calls Lane upset, and when he arrives at the partners' meeting, he asks Joan to leave before yelling at the others for what happened. They lost the account, it seems like. Edwin's wife found out about their night out (the girl left her gum behind), and Pete just says he was doing his job. He tells Lane they don't need them, and Lane finally has enough with Pete's attitude and takes off his jacket and rolls up his sleeves, ready to trade blows with Pete. Pete follows suit, and Don closes the curtains, so whatever happens in the office remains in the office. Roger in the meanwhile takes out a cigarette as the fight begins; he is readying himself for an entertaining fight, from the look of things. Peggy and Joan listen from the other side of the wall, shocked at what is happening inside. Pete finally goes down, and Lane tells him that was his last piece of advice before leaving. Roger says he had Lane. The meeting needs to be rescheduled, as things haven’t really gone as per plan. Joan brings ice to Lane and asks what happened. He wants to know what he does there, and she tells him "something essential." While he's different from the others, that's a good thing. Lane kisses Joan surprising her to no end, and she opens the door before sitting back down. He apologizes, and she just says that everyone's wanted to do that to Pete, ignoring his apology for the kiss. That's definitely true about Ken, who knows that Pete was the one to tell Roger about his writing and had wanted to do the same, for quite some time now. He tells Peggy he's decided to "leave the writing to the writers." When Pete joins Don in the elevator, he wonders why he didn't do anything and says they're supposed to be friends in the office; so why did he allow the fight to go ahead. He tells Don he has nothing. Ken sits up writing. Pete goes back to the class and watches Jenny with "Handsome." The episode ends at this point.

He says that he wants to know as much possible about these guys, so that he can propagate his business. She agrees. At the dinner table, Emile wants to know about Don’s money. Just then Don arrives with Sally and Bobby. Sally tells the room that Pauline tripped over one of Jane’s toys! But Don adds that after Pauline got hurt, Sally called the police, who in turn called the ambulance; and while they were waiting Sally put Pauline’s foot on the pillow and put ice on it and kept her calm. As a reward, Megan is making spaghetti for her. Marie excuses herself from the table as she needs to got to bed. Megan goes in to check on her mom, and she finds that she fell asleep with the cigarette still burning in her hands. Before going to bed, Megan and Don have a talk, where Don tells her that whatever he does, her father would never like him. But Megan also points out that her mother touched Don six times in an hour. Don dismisses it and goes off to sleep. Next day, Megan walks into Don’s office- she has an idea. Its about Heinz. She tells him that last night while she made spaghetti for the kids; she realized that her mom made it for her and that her grand mom made it for her mom. So they could go back to the cave men, to the Middle Ages, the present and then take everyone into the future. And the tagline would be: Some things never change. Don loves the idea. He calls for Stan and Ginzo and tell them that they are going to change Heinz. They are angry. But then they tell Peggy that it is better than their idea. While the idea is being discussed, Peggy gets a call from Abe. He wants to arrange a dinner date. Peggy gets nervous. She goes to meet Joan and tells her that Abe might be planning to break up with her. But Joan thinks otherwise. She thinks that Abe might propose to her. She tells her that men don’t make time for ending things; they just ignore you. Peggy arrives at the restaurant. Abe, instead of proposing her for marriage; proposes that they move in together into her apartment. Peggy is disappointed but tries to cover it with a smile. But she says a ‘yes’. Next, Don is dining with Raymond, his wife Alice, Ken and Cynthia. But things look a little afield. The wives excuse themselves to go to the ladies room. Alice tells Megan that Raymond is basically planning to drop them and that she hopes that they continue to remain friends. Megan comes back to the table and whispers into Don’s ears that they are going to be fired. Megan prompts Don to tell Raymond about the idea they had in mind; but its presented as Don’s idea. Raymond loves it and they stay back for a bottle of champagne. On their way back home, Don and Megan are happy; but also turned on. They head off to the office to make out, as there are a lot of people at home. Next day, Peggy arrives at the office and Joan tells her that Don and Megan sold Heinz over dinner. There is champagne in the conference room. But then she notices that there is no ring on Peggy’s finger and figures out that Peggy might not be in the mood. But Peggy tells her what happened and that she is happy about with decision. Joan tells her that it is a good thing and that it is romantic. Next, Peggy congratulates Megan and tells her that instead of being jealous, she is experiencing her first time all over again. She tells Megan that she should savor it. Megan agrees and leaves. Peggy is wondering about Megan’s dampened reaction. Next day, Sally, Megan and Marie return home with a lot of shopping bags. Sally tells Don that she wants to attend the award ceremony and that she has brought a dress for the occasion. Just then Emile reacts angrily and storms out of the room, with Mariefollowing him.
