5  Novation

Olivia and the others of Fringe division attempt to determine the origin of Peter Bishop, who purports himself as Walter's son who had died as a young boy in the original time line. The Fringe division is brought to investigate the violent murders of a woman and her live-in boyfriend in her home. They find that she was earlier married to Dr. Malcolm Truss a former Massive Dynamic biochemical researcher, and believe her murder was an attempt to access his aborted research on cell cloning by one of the new shape shifters, Nadine, previously seen in "Neither Here Nor There". While at Massive Dynamic, it is revealed that Nina Sharp raised Olivia and her sister after Olivia killed her stepfather and ran away from Walter's Cortexiphan trials. Walter resents Nina for both this and for her interference that led to young Peter's death. Fringe is unable to locate Truss before Nadine does, and place a manhunt to track him down. Meanwhile, Nadine has tried to convince Truss that she is a patient in need of his cloning research, and coerces him to take her to his unmarked laboratory to synthesis the cure. It's revealed she has a daughter, Haley. As Fringe division attempts to work out Truss' location, Peter, from his cell, uses the intercom electronics to try to convince Olivia and the others that he knows about shape shifter technology. Under guard, Peter is able to use one of the memory discs previously recovered by Fringe to identify a tracking signal allowing Fringe to set off to Truss' laboratory. Truss has come to discover Nadine's truth after she temporarily loses control and takes the form of his former wife, but under threat of death, continues to synthesize the cure. Truss finishes the cure just as the FBI and Fringe division surround the warehouse containing the lab. After being given the cure, Nadine attempts to fight off the agents, but appears to have dived into the water below. On recovering a body from the water, they realize that Nadine had taken the place of a fallen agent and has escaped their grasp. Nadine uses a Hermes 3000 typewriter stored in a locker at a Boston train station to type a report informing them of the success of Truss' cure; moments later, the typewriter, on its own, types out further instructions for her. Walter, after trying to resolve his issues with Peter, returns to Fringe to inform Peter that he had two chances to save his son and let him down both times, he will not try to help again for fear of doing more harm. Meanwhile, Olivia experiences an unexplained time fluctuation.

17  Everything in Its Right Place

Lincoln travels to the other side to join forces with Fauxlivia and his own alternate, as they search for a vigilante with a surprising connection to the shapeshifters. Recap: Lincoln arrives at the lab and discovers that Olivia, Walter, and Peter are taking Gene out for some sunlight. Olivia has an Indian necklace that Lincoln left at her apartment and returns it to him, with Robert Danzig’s name on it, and Lincoln realizes that she doesn’t remember him giving it to her or explaining what it means. He talks about how he never really settled down and that his partner gave him the necklace as a reminder that Lincoln would always have a home with Robert and his family. Gene gets restless and Olivia goes to help, leaving Lincoln alone. Astrid comes in with some file boxes, explaining that they have the files on David Robert Jones that their Other Side counterparts have requested. When she explains that she’s been assigned to deliver them but that she has a prior commitment with her father, Lincoln is glad to help. At Fringe Headquarters, Broyles is reluctant to let Lincoln goes since the liaison position with the Other Side is merely a courtesy and he’d rather keep one of his better agents on This side. However, Lincoln insists that they can gain some valuable information on Jones and admits that he currently has nothing to do. On the Other Side in Belford, NY, Paige Randall goes out to her car at the top of a parking garage. A mugger attacks her and she tries to fight back, but her attacker prepares to stab her. However, a shadowy figure emerges, lifts the mugger off of Paige and throws him to the ground. As Paige runs, the mugger stares at his attacker in horror. When Lincoln comes through the bridge to the Other Side, he’s sent to a briefing room. Fauxlivia comes in and tells him that there’s been a change of plans and that she has a new case. As she drives to the parking garage, Lincoln brings her up to speed on how Jones has been experimenting on her counterpart using cortexiphan. Fauxlivia quickly realizes that’s why they sent Lincoln instead of Olivia. They drive past one of the amber zones and Bolivia explains that since the bridge was established, there world has started to stabilize and they’re able to remove the amber barriers. As they drive, Fauxlivia asks Lincoln to settle a bet and asks what his middle name is. When the two agents arrive at the parking garage, Fauxlivia can’t help telling Agent Lee that she knows his middle name, Tyrone. He’s dismayed that Lincoln told it to her. They check the body of mugger, which has been warped beyond recognition, and Lee explains that he appears to be the victim of a local vigilante. It’s the first body that the vigilante has left behind and they wonder what happened to the other criminals in the area that have gone missing. The vigilante, Canaan, now looks like the mugger. He’s removing his belongings from an abandoned church as two hazmat workers, Bill and Ted, remove a nearby amber barrier. They pick up a strong organic reading and follow it to the church, and Canaan hides in a van. They go by him and into the abandoned church, and finds over a dozen bodies in the basement, all hideously twisted and warped. Fauxlivia and her team get called to the church and she tells Lincoln that the debrief will have to wait until she’s free. She suggests that he go back to his world, but he offers to stay and help. As they arrive at the church, one of the DoD soldiers thanks Lincoln. He thinks that the man has mistaken him for his counterpart until Fauxlivia explains that while Lincoln and his people work in secret on their world, they’re considered heroes on the Other Side for helping to create the bridge and heal the breaches. Canaan goes to a shelter and the woman in charge, Helen, asks if he has somewhere to stay. The man admits that his home is gone and she offers to help him find a shelter. Canaan settles down to eat but a man notices a bleeding wound on his neck. When he realizes what has happened, Canaan pulls up his collar and quickly leaves before anyone else can notice. As Lee and Lincoln go over the bodies, Lincoln admits that he isn’t comfortable with the disfigured corpse. Fauxlivia finds some blankets and realizes that someone was living there, and figures that they left when they realized the church would be reopened when the nearby amber was removed. Meanwhile, Lincoln finds a locket on one of the victims and pulls it off. The corpse’s head falls off and he notices a hole in the roof of its mouth. He shows it to Fauxlivia, who says they can use the photo inside to identify the victim. Lincoln has another idea and asks first if they can determine the time of death of the bodies and then check all the surveillance feeds in the area. At Fringe Division, Agent Farnesworth tells Lincoln that the odds of them spotting who he’s looking or on the feeds is astronomical, but he assures her that it’s necessary. Lee confirms the time of death on the women’s corpse and asks Lincoln why he doesn’t go back. He figures that there’s a problem, but Lincoln insists that there isn’t. He admires his counterpart’s self-confidence and wonders where it comes from, and they compare life stories only to discover that they’re identical. Agent Farnesworth interrupts to tell them that she’s spotted the woman on the feeds, but the time stamps shows that she was walking around two days after she died. Lincoln goes to Broyles and tells him that he believes that they’re dealing with a shapeshift. He points out that in his reality, the original shapeshifters used a three-pronged device to penetrate the palate of their victims, sample their DNA, and take on their forms. Broyles doesn’t believe it, pointing out that they haven’t been able to confirm holes in any of the other victims’ palates, and points out that Jones would have no reason to kill criminals. He dismisses Lincoln’s theory as obsession with shapeshifters since one killed his partner, and says that it would be best if he went back to his own world. Canaan goes to a park and watches one boy, Daniel, playing soccer with the others. When Daniel kicks the ball over, Canaan throws it back to him and says that he’s a good player. Two petty crooks, Dawes and Mikey, are taking drugs in an abandoned building. When Mikey goes to the bathroom, Canaan breaks in, grabs Dawes, and pins him to the floor. Mikey arrives but the shapeshifter doesn’t notice him as he extends a tendril from his mouth into Dawes’, penetrating the roof of his mouth. Agent Farnesworth receives a report from the NYPD about Dawes’ death and brings up his file. They confirm he’s a criminal, fitting a profile of the vigilante shapeshifter’s other victims. Broyles orders his people to lock down the area while Lincoln tells Agent Farnesworth to start circulating photos of Dawes’ mugshots. She soon spots “Dawes” on camera and Lee, Lincoln, and Fauxlivia take a tac team into the neighborhood. While they move into position, Lee tells Lincoln that Broyles was out of line earlier for dismissing his theory, and assures his counterpart that he’s a good agent. Lincoln still wonders why the two of them are so different and Lee suggests that he simply decided to be a better man. Lincoln spots Canaan first and chases. The agent gets separate from the others and Canaan doubles back to attack him and then take his gun. However, rather than shoot Lincoln, Canaan runs away. The tac team quickly surround him and Lincoln yells to them not to kill his attacker. After a moment, Canaan drops the gun and willingly surrenders. When Broyles gets word that the suspect is being secured at the warehouse, he tells Farnesworth to relay congratulations. However, he then goes off privately and contacts his world’s Nina Sharp. He warns her that they’re moving the shapeshifter and she assures the colonel that her people will take care of them. Lincoln asks Fauxlivia for a few minutes alone with the shapeshifter so he can talk to him before the DoD take him into custody. When he reminds Fauxlivia that she would do the same thing if she had lots her partner, she gives him five minutes. A sniper enters an adjoining building, goes to the rooftop, and puts together his rifle. Lincoln asks Canaan why he didn’t kill him when he had the chance, and asks who he was when he was a human. When he still gets no response, he finds the photo of Daniel in the man’s wallet and the shapeshifter says that Daniel was someone in his life once, but his mother left Canaan and took Daniel with her. Since then, they’ve lived their lives as if Canaan never existed. All he ever wanted was to be needed, or even missed, and Lincoln says that he understands. Jones found Canaan and claimed to understand how he felt, and offered him the chance to be the first of a new breed. However, when the experiment failed, Jones abandoned him. Lincoln realizes that Canaan has been killing criminals to take their DNA and stay alive, but warns the shapeshifter that Jones has always considered him nothing but an experiment to be disposed of. Canaan doesn’t believe it and insists that Jones will find him and cure his condition like he promised. The tac team takes Canaan out to the transfer van and the sniper opens fire. Fauxlivia spots him and grabs rifle, aims, and fires a single shot, taking out the sniper on the roof. Meanwhile, Lee discovers that one of the stray bullets hit Lee in the chest. As he lies against the van, Lee tells them to figure out who knew that the prisoner was being transferred. Fauxlivia comes over and Lee tells her that he’ll be okay. Angry and shocked, Lincoln grabs Canaan, slams him against the wall, and tells him that Jones is the one who ordered his death. He tells the shapeshifter to choose between being his own man or a puppet. At a base at Fort Lee, the Other Side’s Nina is monitoring the vats containing the shapeshifters. The sniper arrives and tells her that he’s taken care of Canaan and managed to avoid Fauxlivia’s shot. However, when Nina turns her back, the “sniper” accesses the computer systems and Nina realizes that Canaan has taken his place. She tries to escape but is quickly cut off outside and captured. At Fringe Headquarters, Broyles gets word of Nina’s capture. Agent Farnesworth comes in and tells him that she has some bad news. At Fort Lee, Lincoln goes over Nina’s computer systems and discovers that she has a system to monitor all of the tracker implants in the shapeshifters. A soldier calls Fauxlivia over and Lincoln watches as dismay sweeps her feature. A soldier informs him that Lee didn’t make it. The next day, Lincoln takes Canaan across the bridge and introduces him to Walter and Peter. He assures the shapeshifter that he’ll be able to make his own life and gives him Danzig’s necklace as a gift, and Canaan thanks him for everything. Fauxlivia goes to Lee’s locker and looks at the photos he had of the two of them. As she studies them, Lincoln comes in and realizes that she probably doesn’t want to see his face. She assures him that she’s okay and admits that it would be nice if he stayed around.

18  The Consultant

Walter travels to the Alternate Universe to assist in the investigation of a Fringe event with ties to both worlds. Meanwhile, David Robert Jones reveals his next target. Recap The Other Side Agent Lee is buried with honors as Lincoln watches from the car with Agent Farnsworth. At the grave, Altivia promises Lee’s parents that the people responsible will be brought to justice. At Fringe Division, Altivia offers Alt Nina a reduced sentence in return for the identity of the mole within the Department of Defense who works for David Robert Jones. Alt Nina refuses and Altivia warns that she’s making a mistake. However, Alt Nina says that she isn’t going to be there very long and warns that soon things on the Other Side will become much worse. This Side Brian Bauer is holding a business meeting and rounds on one of his employees, Jeremy Delman. He demands to know why he and his partner had to cancel their flight, and Jeremy admits that he didn’t do his job. Bauer suddenly flies up into the air. He vibrates briefly and then crashes down... his body shattered. The Fringe team is called to the office building and Walter notes that he tried to call Peter the previous night and didn’t get an answer. Olivia explains that two men died simultaneously in the building but nobody else was harmed. Walter examines the body confirms that the two men died as if they had been in some kind of high-velocity impact as if they were dropped. Meanwhile, Olivia talks to Jeremy, who says that Bauer was more angry than he had ever seen him. Walter finds a laceration on Bauer’s abdomen and Astrid finds a similar abrasion on the other man. Peter suggests that the marks match those of a seat belt, and that they appear to have been in a car crash. Olivia gets a message from Broyles saying that a third man, a pilot, died in his apartment at the exact same moment. Walter realizes that the injuries are consistent with a plane crash, and then notices a widescreen TV on the wall. The Other Side Agent Farnsworth checks with This Side and confirms that there was a plane crash. As she reports to Broyles, Altivia comes in and he tells Farnsworth to coordinate information on the crash. Altivia has narrowed the list of suspects to 108 people that could be a mole, and Broyles reluctantly agrees to authorize surveillance. He then tells Altivia that a charter plane crashed and their counterparts on This Side died at the same time with the same injuries. Broyles tells her to cross the bridge and coordinate with their counterparts on The Other Side to conduct the investigation. This Side Olivia escorts Walter through the bridge and he thanks her for trusting him. Altivia and Lincoln arrive and she escorts Walter out. Lincoln tells Olivia that Altivia is coping as best she can and Olivia says that her counterpart is lucky to have his help. Altivia and Lincoln then take Walter out and he notices a sign listing all of the hotspots. The security guard at the gate offers his condolences to Altivia on Agent Lee’s death. Walter admits that he doesn’t have a theory yet about the dual deaths, and Altivia wonders if someone could have caused it on purpose, telling them what Alt Nina said. Walter admits that it’s possible, but if so then it’s nothing that he and Bell never conceived of. At the Fringe Division lab, Walter examines the corpses and uses a sound machine to tune to a perfect G. He then takes out the severed hand of one of the victims on This Side and confirms that it is vibrating on the same frequency as other things on The Other Side. Walter believes that the events were somehow linked and Lincoln asks if they have the flight record. They listen to the recording and hear the pilots talk about it breaking part. Walter believes that the person responsible attached a device to the craft to cause the synchronization, but admits he has no idea what was intended. David Robert Jones meets one of his contacts, who says that the experiment went well. Jones tells him to surprise him with the next target. Broyles returns home and his wife Diane greets him, and then says that she’s been entertaining his friend. Jones is there, talking to Broyles’ son Chris. Broyles gets him alone and says that he’s violating contact protocols, and Jones gives him a packet of syringes and says that it’s overdue. He comments that Chris is responding well to the treatments and reminds Broyles that his son was in constant pain. Broyles says that he’ll have to pay for what he’s done eventually, and Jones notes that love makes everyone vulnerable but human. As he leaves, Jones tells Broyles that they’ll soon be calling on him for assistance. This Side In Springfield, Massachusetts, Jones’ man takes a taxi. As he gets out of the taxi when he reaches his destination, he leaves a device under the seat. A woman, Nancy Guerring, gets into the taxi and has the driver take her to Liberty Heights. The Other Side Nancy’s counterpart is buying pet food at a store. This Side The device activates and the taxi starts to vibrate. The Other Side Nancy is thrown across the floor and starts coughing up blood. This Side The next day, Peter and Olivia check out the crash site. They check in with Astrid, who is at the bridge and coordinating with Agent Farnsworth. Astrid has a gift of coffee for Farnsworth. Altivia and Walter are at the pet store examining the other Nancy. They confirm that the injuries on the two women are identical, while Peter searches the taxi for the device responsible. He finally locates the case and opens it, confirming that there’s amphilicite inside. The Other Side Walter, Altivia, and Lincoln report to Colonel Broyles, and Walter irritably admits that he doesn’t know what Jones is doing. Altivia offers to put him up at her house and goes to get Walter’s bag. While he waits, Walter apologizes to Colonel Broyles for snapping at him and admits that if he hadn’t crossed over years ago, they wouldn’t be in the current situation. Colonel Broyles asks if he would do it all over again if he had the chance, and Walter admits that now that he’s met the adult Peter, he believes he would do the same thing despite the consequences. Agent Farnsworth approaches Altivia and says that she checked the 108 names, and found nothing to implicate any of them. That night, Colonel Broyles meets with Jones, who gives him a device and tells him to affix it to the control panel on the Machine. When Colonel Broyles points out that the Machine is healing their world, Jones says that he’s healing Chris and walks away. Broyles goes home and gives Chris another injection, and the boy talks about how he got picked first for a sports team at school. Chris also learned that Stacy, the girl he has a crush on, told a friend that she likes Chris. Broyles tucks him in and says goodnight. At Altivia’s apartment, Walter gets up and discovers that his host is drinking. She’s going over the evidence from Agent Lee’s murder and tells Walter her theory about the mole. Altivia also has all of Lee’s personal belongings, but admits that she can’t face his parents and has been drinking. Walter makes her some eggs to help her sober up and suggests she sleep on it, but Altivia says that there is no evidence. He suggests that the lack of evidence is evidence and casually notes that Colonel Broyles could have done it. Once she sobers up, Altivia goes to see Alt Nina and turns off the surveillance cameras in her cell. She then tells Alt Nina that they found the mole and have Broyles in custody. Altivia assures the prisoner that he won’t be able set her free, but Alt Nina dismisses him as a pawn and their knowledge changes nothing. She insists that Jones will come for her, but Altivia points out that Jones may consider her as a pawn as well. Altivia then goes to Fringe Division and tells Lincoln what she learned. Agent Farnsworth interrupts them to explain that Broyles didn’t come in and his subcutaneous tracker was deactivated two hours ago. Colonel Broyles goes to Liberty Island with the device. He hesitates for a few seconds and then gets out and enters the DoD facility. The soldier checks his show-me and confirms that he’s good to go. Agent Farnsworth tracks Broyles’ show-me to Liberty Island and reports to Altivia. She and Lincoln go there and bypass security and enter the bridge. Colonel Broyles goes to the chamber containing the Machine and looks up at it. Broyles from This Side arrives, saying he got his counterpart’s message. When Altivia and Lincoln come in, Broyles tells them that his counterpart has turned himself in and told them everything. Colonel Broyles apologizes to Altivia. Later, Walter prepares to go back and Altivia hugs him. She thanks him for everything and Walter tells her not to judge Colonel Broyles, because he knows more than most what people will do for love. Altivia notes that Lincoln isn’t going back, and he reminds her that he promised to stay and help find the people who killed both their partners. As they leave, Lincoln assures Altivia that eventually it does get better. Colonel Broyles is placed in a cell near Alt Nina’s. This Side Back at his lab in Harvard, Walter calls in Peter and Olivia. He tells them that Jones was doing a test and taking readings to find a common denominator, a frequency that could link both universes. Walter warns them that if Colonel Broyles had attached the device, Jones could have collapsed both universes.

19  Letters of Transit

The Fringe team goes back to the future as the story jumps ahead to 2036, when the Observers and the Fringe team engage in a game-changing battle. Recap: In the year 2015, the Observers finally conquered the Earth and forced most of humanity to bow before them. The “Natives” formed resistance groups against them, but most were quickly crushed. Some humans have turned “Loyalist” and serve the Observers. Fringe Division remains, but now polices Native crimes under the watchful eye of the Observers. Boston, 2036 A Fringe agent, Etta, goes to a club where Observers go to relax. One of them grabs a girl, Kitty, and the owner, Rick, attacks the Observer. Loyalist police quickly restrain him and the Observer in charge of Human activities, Captain Windmark, comes over. Rick spits in his face and Windmark casually wipes it away and then concentrates. The owner’s ears begin to bleed but Etta comes up behind him and knocks him out. She tells Windmark that as a native, Rick is her responsibility and apologizes for any inconvenience. Windmark tries to scan her as well and sarcastically notes that she’s always exactly what she seems. Etta and Kitty get Rick outside and Rick admits that he had to piss off Windmark so that the Observer couldn’t read his mind. He notes that Etta has no such problem and warns that if the Observers find out that there is anyone who can resist their abilities then they’ll kill them immediately. He then takes Etta to a van where he has a large block wrapped in a blanket. Rick shows the contents to Etta and says that no one else knows about what he has or the other two like it. As he starts to tell Etta where she can find the others, a Loyalist sniper kills him. Etta leaves her contact’s body behind and drives the van to a safe spot. She then checks on the contents and confirms that it’s a block of amber... with Walter Bishop inside. The next day, Etta meets her fellow agent Simon Foster at Fringe Headquarters. She tells Simon that Rick is dead and explains that she had an open order with the owner to obtain any information on the missing Fringe team. Simon tells her to let it go but Etta explains that she has the legendary Walter Bishop and takes her partner to the storage room where he’s keeping him. They realize that he encased himself in Amber and Etta tells Simon that Rick said that the other members of the Fringe team were at the same place where Walter was. Since Rick died before he could tell Etta where to find them, Etta figures that Walter can tell them once they free him from the amber. Windmark comes to see Broyles, the Native liaison at Fringe Division. The Observer tries to make small talk and then shows Broyles a hologram of Rick. Windmark warns Broyles that he can’t have native-on-native murders under his command and that the number of them is increasing. When Broyles says that he doesn’t have any leads, Windmark warns him that he’ll have to take over if Broyles can’t do his job. Broyles tells him that he’ll handle it and then asks Windmark why he’s stuck supervising human. The Observer merely smiles and says that he likes animals. Simon experiments with some of the amber and confirms that it can only be rendered gaseous for a second or two. Etta goes to get some old level-two tech and the storage technician warns her that she doesn’t want to be seen working too closely with Simon, and that his Loyalist friends don’t trust the man. Etta refuses to be baited and takes the weapon, a portable crowd control concussion weapon, back to Simon. Simon transmutes the amber for a split second, giving Etta the chance to blast Walter free of the amber. A groggy Walter stares up at Etta and says that she’s pretty, and she tells him that he’s been in the amber for twenty years. Walter recovers and Simon has some red licorice for him. They explain that Walter and the other members of Fringe found a way to defeat the Observers and show him the blueprints they have of the device. However, Simon and Etta soon realize that Walter is mentally unstable. They check his brain and confirm that his neural pathways were degraded due to exposure to the amber blast. Etta goes to see a wheelchair-bound Nina Sharp at the Ministry of Science. The Fringe agent has a cover story to explain why she’s there and Nina is careful to guard her thoughts against nearby Observers. They go outside to Nina’s car and Nina is surprised and pleased to see Walter waiting for her. He doesn’t remember Nina and wanders off, and Etta tells her what happened. Nina admits that Walter and the others saved the world but warns Etta that there are always consequences. However, she admits that she does know a way to restore Walter to normal. Walter had left several brain tissue samples with Massive Dynamic and they’re in a vault at the old building in the city proper across the river. However, Nina warns Etta that the tissue decays quickly outside of storage and that the only sample is in the Massive Dynamic building... in the heart of Observer territory. Etta and Simon go to get transit passes while Walter waits with Nina and casually fixes her defective cybernetic arm. Once the agents have the passes, they pick Walter up and take him to the transit building. When he sees one of the Observers, Walter yells that he’s a monster, drawing the attention of a Loyalist guard. The man checks their papers and confirms that they’re valid, while Walter rants incoherently. Simon claims that Walter is his grandfather and they’re taking him to his wife’s grave. The officer finally lets them pass but warns them that he won’t be so nice next time. Once they get into the city, the trio goes past the Observers swarming the streets and make it to the old Massive Dynamic building. Using a code that Nina has provided, they get inside through the parking garage and enter the abandoned building. However, they inadvertently set off an alarm, notifying Agent Romick at Fringe Headquarters. He notifies Broyles, who calls Windmark. Simon and Etta remove the brain samples from storage and prepare a formula from them to inject into Walter. Once they drug him unconscious, they give him the injection and wait for the formula to restore Walter’s original brain patterns. As they wait, Simon talks bout how he was in college when the Observers began their purge, and realized that his parents were resistance members that had sent him as far away as they could for Simon’s own good. Etta admits that she can’t even remember what her parents look like because she lost them when she was 4. Walter wakes, back to his normal self and demands to know if the Observers are still on Earth. An Observer and his squad of Loyalists officers respond to the alarm and find the tracks leading through the parking garage. The Observer tells his men to kill them on sight. As Walter studies the blueprints of the weapon he planned to use against the Observers, he informs Simon and Etta that there was one friendly Observer. September warned him that in 2609 the Observers polluted Earth and traveled back in time to find a new place to colonize and make their own. Walter confirms that he can recreate the weapon but warns that it will take some time. Etta asks him about the others on his team and Walter seems to recognize her. Before he can ask who she is, they hear the Observer squad enter the building. Realizing that they’re coming, Walter opens a secret panel and orders Simon and Etta to follow him. When the Observer arrives seconds later, he senses the panel and blasts it open with one of the Observer weapons. Simon and Etta realize that Walter has gone back and go to get him. He’s in a storage room rigging an anti-matter device and takes Simon’s watch to rig a timing device. Once he’s done, Walter orders them to leave and the trio departs. The Observer and his men come in and try to figure out what the device is... just too late. Walter, Simon, and Etta get out of the building and the scientist informs the agents that he knows where they can find the rest of the team. He casually walks away as the building disintegrates behind them, killing everyone inside. Down in the sewers, Walter leads the agents to his team, also embedded in amber. Walter creates a wand device to free them while Simon asks Etta what Walter found so familiar about her earlier. However, she ignores her partner’s question. Broyles receives a report from the Loyalist officer at the transition, confirming that Simon was there. The Fringe chief orders Romick to activate Simon’s transponder and then calls Windmark. Walter prepares the augmentation buffers that Simon created to free him, to free his teammates. Simon comes over and praises Walter, insisting that he’s the figure that they need to lead the insurgents and show that the Natives can fight back. An increasingly surly Walter tells him to stop pontificating and activates the buffers. Once the amber sublimates momentarily, Etta blasts Astrid free before it can resolidify. However, Simon realizes that the equipment has been damaged. While he tries to fix it, Astrid recovers and looks around, and is surprised to see William Bell embedded in the amber. Walter hushes her before she can comment. Meanwhile, Simon realizes that Broyles has activates his tracker and warns Etta that they’re out of time. He gives Etta the sublimation equipment and tells her to activate it on his mark. Etta hesitates but Simon insists and she frees the next person. Broyles and his squad arrive in the hideout and find Simon... embedded in the amber in the act of pushing someone out. As his men search the area, Broyles finds a half-eaten piece of red licorice on the floor and realizes what it means. The remaining team escapes on a monorail and Astrid asks Walter why he left Bell behind. He reminds her of what Bell did to Olivia and says that he doesn’t deserve any compassion. However, he assures his assistant that he has what he needs, and shows her Bell’s severed hand, still embedded in a piece of amber. Etta is looking out the back of the train and fingering her necklace, which has a spent bullet on it. Peter Bishop comes up behind her and says that he’s sorry about Simon. Etta asks if knows her and Peter points out that he has been in the amber for the last 20 years. However, he looks closely at her and realizes that Etta is short for “Henrietta”: the name of his daughter. Peter hugs his and Olivia’s daughter as the monorail continues on into the night.
