1  Boardwalk Empire

It's January 1920. On the eve of Prohibition, Nucky Thompson, Atlantic City's Treasurer, condemns alcohol at a Women's Temperance League meeting. This is where he is noticed by Margaret Schroeder, a pretty, pregnant housewife who comes to him for help in getting her abusive husband, Hans, a job. Later that evening, the duplicitous Nucky privately tells his ward bosses about the opportunity to make huge profits selling bootleg liquor. At a countdown-to-midnight blast at Babette's Supper Club, he assures Jimmy Darmody, a recently returned WWI vet, that his appointment as "Man Friday" to the new Chief Clerk of the Fourth Ward, Paddy Ryan, will lead to bigger things. Jimmy, meanwhile, has higher aspirations and ends up making an alliance that may have dire consequences for both him and Nucky. Recap: The show opens up with a liquor drop off. The show is based in Atlantic City in 1920. They take the goods and are driving to New Jersey. That is when they see a dead body in the middle of a dirt road with a car that is turned over. When they go to get the body off the road and they turn a car over, they get bombarded by other people and it turns out to be a set up. This was days before prohibition begins. The city's treasurer goes up to speak in front of a group of older women. His name is Enoch "Nucky" Thompson. He gives an endearing speech about all of the hard times he has gone through while they all watch attentively. There is one particular woman who seems to be incredibly moved by his speech. She looked like she was seconds away from crying the whole time. The next character we are introduced to is the World War 1 veteran who has a small family and was clearly traumatized at war. He tries to act as if he was more like desensitized, but you can tell that it does bother him a little what happened over there. He seems to be working for Nucky with his under handed dealings. He even shows up to a very important dinner. He is rough around the edges and has little to no manners. Nucky is walking up the boardwalk and he stops to look in one of the store front windows. This is where there are babies. These babies are sick and shown off in the window. The one shown looked as if it had been born two months too early. He seemed to be moved by this. Not necessarily in a positive way, either. There is a meeting of minds, so to speak, as all of the area's gangsters meet up to discuss what is going on. This is where we learn that Al Capone is hanging around at that time, we even meet him. He is very young at this time. After they have their meeting, Nucky sleeps with a woman who says things he doesn't like during sex. Jimmy (Pitt) goes to see midgets box it out in the ring and runs into Al Capone. They bond over this and become somewhat friends. The woman that was in the audience of Nucky's speech is Margaret Schroeder. She runs to speak to him after she had clearly been beaten by someone. They have a compelling conversation in which Nucky ends up handing her enough cash to get her through the next few months. When she goes home and her husband finds out about the cash he loses his mind and beats her a great deal. He is beating her while all the while their younger children are watching AND she is pregnant with their third child. There are two gangsters that are definitely about to get into some trouble. There is Rothstein and Luciano. They are gambling at Nucky's and he eventually needs to talk them down. That is when Mr. Schroeder shows up wasted. He is mad and decides to make a big scene about the money his wife had acquired. Nucky had to get physical and he knocked the man out within two hits. We also meet a man named Mickey Doyle. He is what seems like a morgue worker. He has sick ideas and fantasies. He seems to like corpses and puts aside the prettier ones so that he can use them up. He ends up getting arrested by the feds and Mr. Schroeder ends up being killed. The circle seems complete itself when Jimmy, Al Capone, and a couple other men decide that they are going to rob Rothstein's crew. They kill all of the guys and run off with the alcohol. Jimmy talks to Nucky about it and it seems like Nucky didn't really want anyone to die. Nucky tells him that being in the war had turned him into nothing but a murderer and that's why he behaves the way that he has been behaving. Nucky goes on a little visit to see the Commodore. There is a pamphlet that is called The International Jew. Nucky looks over it and then seems to lose interest. While he is dealing with that, that is when Nucky's cops on pay roll have taken Mr. Schroeder and thrown him into the ocean. They use this as a set up also, blaming him for murdering the men that they did. After that, Nucky goes to the hospital to see Mrs. Schroeder. He brings her flowers and checks in to see if she is doing alright. Share this article with your friends

2  The Ivory Tower

Straight-laced, uptight Agent Nelson Van Alden investigates a crime which he feels has been pinned on a scapegoat, so pays a visit to Nucky and leaves convinced that the Treasurer is "as corrupt as the day is long." Nucky quickly does damage control, enlisting his brother, Sheriff Elias Thompson, to close ranks with their underlings. Meanwhile, in Chicago, Al Capone shows a local reporter what he thinks about accusations that Johnny Torrio was involved in the killing of local mobster "Big Jim" Colosimo. Back in Atlantic City, Nucky discusses the upcoming election with Commodore Louis Kaestner, his aging mentor, with whom he debates the women's vote issue. Later, before heading out for a night on the town, Nucky chews out an angry Arnold Rothstein over the phone, then meets privately with Margaret Schroeder, who asks him for help in providing for her children. As a long day ends, a traveling salesman named George Baxter, in town for a few days with an unwilling young beauty named Claudia, makes a startling discovery while on the road home to Baltimore. Recap: A coffin is being carried out of a church in Chicago, and the journalists are shouting questions. “Ask him who ordered the hit on Colosimo”, “Mr. Torio, is it true the police questioned you about Big Jim’s murder?” Torio responds that they were like brothers, and somebody wisecracks “Like Cain & Abel?” Torio said maybe it was a robbery, and the reporter answered that the cops say nothing was taken. Nucky Thompson is having his shoes shined, and asks Harold if he’s a family man. Harold answers that he has a wife and four boys. Eddie Kessler tries to announce the arrival of a visitor, who is hot on his heels. Agent Nelson Van Alden, Bureau of Internal Revenue. Nucky offers him a shoeshine, coffee, or something stronger. Van Alden states that Nucky is a hard man to meet with, as he’d been waiting on him since 9:00 a.m. Nucky says that he, as well as the City of Atlantic, march to the beat of their own drummer. The agent states that he’s investigating Saturday night’s shootings, and Nucky retorts that there should be nothing to investigate, since the guilty party is deceased. Nelson states that the alleged guilty party, Schroeder, was a law-abiding citizen who had worked the same job for the past 11 years. Nucky says that Nelson should speak to the current sheriff. Nelson says that is Nucky’s brother, Elias. Nucky asks if Agent Van Alden would be interested in tickets to the theatre and maybe an eligible woman to join him. Van Alden remains stone-faced as he continues his line of questioning about Schroeder. Nucky asks him if he shouldn’t be out raiding a still somehwere, and Nelson states that he marches to the beat of his own drummer as well. Nucky tells his houseman to get his brother on the phone immediately. Jimmy sees a necklace in the window that he admires. The Ku Klux Klan is handing out fliers to join their organization. George Baxter hails Nucky, and after asking Eddie who the guy is, responds to the greeting. Baxter says business is good and introduces his little friend Claudia to Nucky. He treats her well, and excuses himself. Elias Thompson, the sheriff, arrives to question Mrs. Schroeder. She believes him innocent, but the sheriff lets her know that he’d hate to see her children wind up wards of the court - so should anybody ask if it’s possible her dead husband was guilty of the murders, she should answer in the affirmative. She agrees. He gives her an envelope from Nucky, and tells her to keep what they discussed in the forefront of her mind. Van Alden is giving his report on Nucky, how everybody pays graft to him, and he has all the “darkies” swearing allegiance to him. He also gets money from casinos, whorehouses, and even has a wire service for the racing results. Prohibition doesn’t even appear to be an issue in Atlantic City. The agent states that there’s hardly a bar or restaurant where you can’t get a drink. His superior asks Van Alden about the man they were following, Arnold Rothstein; what about him? Van Alden says that frankly he believes that Nucky Thompson is the bigger fish. Nucky and Eli are talking. Nucky asks why he dumped Schroeder in the bay, his body could have been rendered unidentifiable or even floated off to Nova Scotia. He told Eli to use his noodle next time, and thumped him upside the head. He then told Mickey to wake up, and informed him he was not out of jail, he was out of business. Chalky White is taking over. Nucky told him that he broke the cardinal rule when he got caught. Nick asked what he should tell his partners, and Nucky said tell them whatever - but the feds know who Mickey is, and that makes him contagious. Nucky refuses to bail Mick out of jail, and leaves. Jimmy sets up a Christmas tree for his wife and son, and gives Angela a beautiful necklace. And a vacuum. The noise of the vacuum scares Tommy, and he leaps sobbing into his mother’s arms. Yale is questioned as to who ordered him to kill Colosimo by Arnold Rothstein. Jimmy and his mistress are making love. She says it’s not a good time, so offers him oral sex. They are interrupted by Tommy waking up. Jimmy sees his mom, she’s a showgirl. He got her the necklace he was admiring in the window. He leaves her and returns to work. Nucky is angry with him and starts questioning him about the other night. Jimmy says he was talking to Al Capone, who works for Johnny Torrio. They did the liquor truck heist. He apologizes and says he’ll work harder. Nuck says he doesn’t work for him anymore, and Jimmy made that decision, not Nuck. Nuck tells Jimmy he figures he still owes him $3000, and he has 24 hours to come up with it. Eddie Corrigan, Chicago Tribune, shows up and tells the bartender he’ll have a whiskey and a statement on the record. He asks the bartender his name, “Al Brown” (it’s actually Al Capone). Eddie says he’s running a story linking Johnny Torrio to the Big Jim murder, and asks Al if he’d like to make a statement. Al says sure, and hits Eddie over the head with the whiskey bottle and commences beating the daylights out of him. Nucky’s phone is ringing. Eddie comes and announces It’s Arnold Rothstein again. Nuck tells him to put on the black suit, as he’ll be driving tonight. He then accepts the call from Arnold, who tells him he never received the delivery he arranged. Arnold says it’s bad enough that it’s bad enough that the delivery went to Chicago, but also his sister-in-law’s nephew was one of the drivers who was killed. So now he figures Nucky owes him $100,000. Nucky said he didn’t sell Arnold’s load to anyone, and he doesn’t care if his mother was one of the drivers. Arnold asks if this is how Nuck does business, and Nick retorts “You want to see how I do business? Show your face again in Atlantic City.” Mrs. Schroeder returns home and looks at her bruised face in the mirror. Nelson Van Alden knocks at the door and asks to speak to her about her husband. She invites him to sit. He tells her that he doesn’t think her husband did anything wrong, and that he’s actually being used as a patsy to cover up the real perpetrator. Baxter isn’t getting anywhere with Claudia, so Nuck tells her she should be in the Atlantic City beauty pageant, and that Baxter is going to be one of the judges. Jimmy calls Al and asks for $500 to be wired to him Al pretends he can’t hear him and ends the call, laughing. Nuck is having drinks with the Commodore, saying that a certain politician would definitely win if the ladies could vote. The Commodore summons his black maid and tells her to give her opinion on the League of Nations. She says she doesn’t know what that is. He asks her about the Harriday Act. She apologizes because she’s not versed in anything like that. He insults her and she leaves. He says to Nuck “that’s your woman vote”. Jimmy steals back the necklace he bought his mother so he can make up the difference in the $3000 he owes Nuck. Agent Van Alden is writing his wife a letter. He asks her to run the water twice daily so the pipes don’t freeze. A woman in the bathtub is telling Nuck he should grow a moustache, like Douglas Fairbanks. Eddie says Mrs. chroeder is there, and Nuck goes down to meet her. She returns the money, saying it’s weighing too heavy on her conscience. Mrs. Schroeder asks if Nuck’s wife was very young. He says yes, she was 28 and beautiful. She says that she can’t accept charity, and wants to know what Nuck wants from her. He says he wants her to vote republican. Baxter is coming on all hot and heavy to Claudia, who is trying to get him to back off. She tells him she’s not that kind of girl, and slaps him. He tells her to pack her things, he’s taking her home to Baltimore. Jimmy interrupts Nucky’s party give him the $3000. Nucky promptly bets the money on black, and loses. As George takes Claudia home he talks her down all the way home. She tells him to pull over, and go ahead and kiss her. He does. She then tells him to unbutton his trousers, and she gives him a hand job. A bloody man shows up in their headlights, and they both start screaming.
